What the Mission-Aligned Margin™ Method Is
The Mission-Aligned Margin™ Method is a leadership formation method developed by Dr. Ella Thompson to address a recurring tension in leadership: how to lead faithfully and effectively without fragmentation, depletion, or self-erasure.
Rooted in theological reflection, leadership studies, and decades of work with leaders across ministry, education, and organizational life, the Method centers coherence between calling, capacity, and cost. The Mission-Aligned Margin™ Method does not ask leaders to choose between faithfulness and sustainability. It insists that the two belong together.
The Method serves as the governing Formation Framework—an integrated approach to cultivating authority, discernment, and sustainability over time.
The Core Spine (Calling–Capacity–Cost)
The Mission-Aligned Margin™ Method is organized around three realities leaders must govern in every season:
- Calling — the assignment and responsibility you are actually carrying now (not the identity you once carried).
- Capacity — the physical, operational, cognitive, and relational ability required to carry that assignment without collapse.
- Cost — the true price of the work, including hidden costs; what must be covered, constrained, or redesigned to prevent extraction.
Coherence is formed when calling, capacity, and cost are named honestly—and governed deliberately.
